Daylight Savouring

Savouring is the use of thoughts and actions to increase the intensity, duration, and appreciation of positive experiences and emotions.

Call me crazy but for me when daylight savings comes around it’s a prompt for some Spring cleaning of my wardrobe and bathroom drawers.

The start of spring might have inspired you to buy some beautiful new pieces, and there might be some clothes that you are ready to say goodbye to. Ideally, your winter clothes should be dry-cleaned or aired in the sun. Why not store your winter jackets and dresses in cloth hanging bags and label them? I did that last spring and this winter whenever I got a dress or coat out, it felt like it was brand new.

We bring a lot of toiletries and medicines into the house on a regular basis and they have a tendency to outgrow the storage available in most bathrooms. Take some time at the end of summer to check expiration dates on sunscreen, and rinse out the expired bottles, before recycling them. I’m not sure why, but in my house if a new bottle of something is bought, nobody wants to use the last little bit in the old one. I tend to pour the last bit into the new bottle, not caring if it’s the same brand or not, as long as it is the same product; that is, shampoo into shampoo and conditioner into conditioner. My sister-in-law with four daughters told me that she recently found twenty-nine shampoo bottles while cleaning her daughters’ bathroom! Go figure, as she would say. Bathroom drawers and cupboards also get dirty and filled with hair strands and gunk, so a good seasonal clean is necessary for both happiness and hygiene.

Creating seasonal rituals to nurture our spaces is a way to honour and appreciate our homes.

What are yours?
